After taking a look at the Sony Handycam camcorders with Sony CX series and XR series, I notice that the CX series could be camcorder without built-in flash memory, or flash memory camcorder with up to 64GB internal memory. The XR series are camcorders with hard disk and expandable SD memory card slot.
The size actually does not matter to me, as they are not a big cam yet with 2 3/8 x 2 3/4 x 4 1/2 inch (59 x 67 x 125mm) for XR350 and 2 1/8 x 2 5/8 x 5 inch (52 x 64 x 125mm) for CX350. Here I focus on the Sony HDR-CX350V and Sony HDR-XR350V for comparison. And hope it helps you understand Sony CX vs XR.
Pros of Sony CX350 vs XR350 (CX vs XR)
- More colors. There is only one color for XR series, while the CX series are more colorful with black, blue, or red shell. Actually there are only black and blue for CX350.
- Lower price with also all functions like XR350 and good performance in low light.
- Less chance for storage crash/destroy without hard drive disk.
Cons of Sony CX350 vs XR350 (CX vs XR)
- Smaller storage. Actually, I think the 32GB flash memory is quite large space for recording videos. However, if you are on a long trip, you may need more memory. The XR350 has a 160GB built-in HDD.
- CX350 uses different menu. (It may be the factor for some people, but I don’t really think it matters)
The specifications of Sony CX350 are similar to that of XR350. Both can track your location with GPS, and provide 1/4″ “Exmor R” CMOS sensor to records videos in AVCHD or SD. When the camcorder is connected to a PC installed with Picture Motion Browser (PMB), it is easy to transfer files to PC as PMB will import the flies. If the iMovie on your Mac computer does not import the HD videos from Sony CX350 or XR350, you can go to the AVCHD folder and then the subfolder STREAM to find .mts files. Aunsoft MTS/M2TS Converter for Mac will make the AVCHD files compatible with Mac for you to edit AVCHD footage on Mac OS X.
