Sony HDR-XR520 makes it easy to record videos without worry about the storage, as it includes large 240GB hard drive. Sony HDR-XR520V is the NTSC model to record 1080/60i videos, and the HDR-XR520VE is the PAL model for 1080/50i videos. The Sony HD camcorder records audio with Dolby Digital 5.1-channel. However, iMovie 8 does not recognize the .mts video footage.
I googled and was recommended to upgrade to iMovie 9, but not sure if it works. I kept searching alternative solution, and get Aunsoft MTS Converter for Mac as the Sony video converter on Mac, which can convert Sony HDR-SR520V 1080/60i MTS to MOV for editing in iMovie. Actually the HD MOV is also compatible with Mac QuickTime Player.

If you face problem importing AVCHD camcorder videos to iMovie like me, just follow the steps below to enjoy the HD videos on Mac.
Step 1. Add Sony XR520V video to Aunsoft MTS/M2TS Converter for Mac.
After connecting Sony HDR-XR520V to Apple iMac via USB 2.0, copy and transfer .mts files from Sony XR520 HDD. Run Aunsoft MTS/M2TS Converter for Mac as the Best Mac Sony HDR-XR520 video converter, and then click the “Add” button or drag and drop the .mts files to the application.
Step 2. Choose HD MOV format.
From the “Format” option, choose Adobe Premiere/Sony Vegas > MOV (AVC)(*.mov) as output format. The Sony MTS file converter will convert Sony XR520V MTS to MOV with original video resolution like 1440×1080, 1920×1080.

Step 3. Convert Sony XR520 AVCHD video to MOV for iMovie.
Click the convert button on the bottom right corner, and the conversion from Sony XR520 MTS to MOV for iMovie starts right now. The conversion time will depend on the video length you want to convert. After the conversion, the HD video will be ready for editing in iMovie.
Tips:
1. The Mac Sony AVCHD video converter works with both the NTSC and PAL camcorders like HDR-CX550, HDR-XR550, HDR-CX110, HDR-CX150, HDR-SR11, HDR-TG5, Alpha NEX-5, Cyber-shot TX9/TX7/HX5V and so on. For more information about solutions for Sony camcorders, just go to the Aunsoft Sony camcorder column.
2. You can also handle TiVo, HDV video, or downscale Sony flip video like Bloggie Touch. The HD MOV videos would work perfectly with other non-linear editing (NLE) software on Mac like Final Cut Pro (FCP), Final Cut Express (FCE), Adobe Premiere Pro, Kdenlive, and so on.
